I’m happy to share that our project AIRIN: Medical Decision Support System for Explainable AI-driven Diagnosis of Ophthalmic Diseases was recognised at the AI & Data Awards 2026 powered by UBITECH, during the awards ceremony held in Athens on 27 January 2026.
AIRIN received both a Gold and a Platinum distinction in Best Machine Learning Solution—a meaningful acknowledgement that sustained, careful work on clinically-relevant and explainable AI does not go unnoticed. More importantly, it reflects positive feedback from the broader community on the practical value of the innovative approaches we are proposing.
Special thanks go to the two scientific leads who carry the largest share of the ideation and direction behind AIRIN: Prof. Elpiniki Papageorgiou and Dr. Eirini Maliagkani. Their insight, standards, and consistency are central to what this project has become.
AIRIN is developed through the collaboration of ACTA Lab (University of Thessaly) and the 1st University Ophthalmology Clinic, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).
